Mission
The
mission of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Academy of Certified
Hazardous Materials Managers (ETCHMM) is to provide a balanced program
for Certified Hazardous Material
Managers in the following four areas.

Environmental Health and Safety
-
Regulatory Compliance and Policy
- Science
and Technology
-
Materials Handling, Emergency Response, and Remediation
Objectives
ETCHMM's
objectives are to:
-
develop
professional recognition for Certified Hazardous Material
Managers;
-
provide,
promote, and encourage continuing education for maintaining
certification
status and to document related training as recognized by the
Chapter;
-
provide
a forum for information exchange among peers in order to promote
qualified
environmental decision making;and
-
broaden our scope and understanding of prudent hazardous materials
management, in the interest of protecting human health and
the environment.
ETCHMM
draws on available resources in the Knoxville/Oak Ridge, Tennessee
area to support the local community and advance the mission of ACHMM
through activities, meetings, tours, presentations and training.
Chapter members include representatives of federal and state government
agencies, industry, utilities, academia, and other professional
organizations. Recent activities that ETCHMM members have participated
in include:

local emergency response planning and exercises; and
- county-sponsored
household hazardous materials round-ups.
In
addition, ETCHMM has
- provided
instructors for waste management and transportation sections
of the Certified Health Physics certification course;
- sponsored
and provided instructors for the national IHMM Certification
Examination Review Course;
- sponsored
speakers from emergency response agencies (e.g., the Incident
Commander at a railcar sulfuric acid release in west Knoxville,
Department of Energy (DOE) remediation projects, shock sensitive
chemical treatment project, medical facilities, and professional
safety organizations;and
- sponsored
tours of Transuranic Waste Treatment Facility and Spallation
Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and computer
component recycling facility in Oak Ridge.
For
the past three years, ETCHMM has sponsored a year-end event to celebrate
the Chapter’s accomplishments, as well as provide a networking
opportunity for local vendors and professionals in hazardous materials
management and environment, health, and safety. These well-attended
functions have great speakers, good food, and a fun atmosphere to
meet others in our profession and to see the latest equipment and
technology.

hazardous waste (HHW), including paints, gasoline, oils,
fertilizers, pesticides and fluorescent lamps—must
be disposed of properly.
The
state of Tennessee has a HHW
website that describes the requirements, acceptance
criteria and collection locations.

Did

Hazardous Materials Managers (ETCHMM) was founded in 1994?
ETCHMM achieved official incorporation by receiving its charter
at the ACHMM National Conference in October 1995. We celebrate
our 10 year anniversary this year. |
